Learn to Dive In Cyprus

DIVING AROUND CYPRUS

The crystal waters of the Mediterranean Sea rather warm temperature of the water (15 - 29 centigrade), as well as the magnificent submarine world, we make diving very tempting. Diving at TOP PADI 5 Star Centres denotes a high standard, like us. We provide you with all the necessary equipment, including boat and car to all dive locations.

Diving Conditions

With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, warm water temperatures (15 to 29 C or 64 to 82 F), great visibility (50-130 ft), and interesting marine life. Cyprus attracts diving enthusiasts from all over the world. We have a wide variety of dive sites to choose. Cyprus offers some of the best diving in the Mediterranean, with calm, turquoise waters. Although during the summer temperatures can easily reach 30 - 40 C (86 C - 104 F) some thermal protection is needed for diving. Most people wear shorties or 3mm suits, but one can snorkel comfortably without any thermal protection. The water temperature varies from 16 C in the winter to 28 C in the summer (60 to 82 F). The water is generally warmer on the eastern part of the island, near Protaras.
There are no dangerous underwater currents or strong surf in the popular diving areas,
but divers should always check with the local dive shops for conditions.

The water around Cyprus is characterized by low (which translates to visibilities of more than 100 ft - 30m) and high salinity about (39%). The relatively around Cyprus also attract large pelagic species that migrate through the Suez Canal. However, if you are looking for Great Whites you will be disappointed. There are no recorded incidents of shark attacks in Cyprus.

Marine Life

Although at first sight the underwater of Cyprus might seem rather poor compared to the tropics on closer inspection it is full of surprises. Many species hide themselves in the sand and the reefs or dwell below the thermo-clines, which in the summer are usually around 18 to 30, meters (60 to 98 feet).
Since the opening of the Suez Canal the eastern Mediterranean has been colonized by several species from the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.
At shallow depths you will see Poseidon's meadows, where small wrasses, groupers, and other beautiful fish can be found. In the shallow rocky reefs you will see a variety of colourful sea urchins and fan worms, as well as starfish,
rays, and parrot fish. If you look close enough you will discover moray eels and octopus hiding in crevices.
The rocky reefs are usually covered with large coloured sponges. If you dive near Akamas and Lara you may be lucky enough to see the green turtles, (kareta-kareta) a protected species in Cyprus. Very often, you may see pieces of pottery and other ancient artifacts on the sea floor.

Please be aware that the removal of antiquities and sponges from the sea floor is strictly forbidden.

Dive Sites

The most popular dive spots are in the Ayia Napa-Protaras area and Paphos. Other interesting sites are located near Larnaca, and Limassol. The most pristine diving in Cyprus can be found around the rugged Akamas peninsula, on the northwestern tip of the island.

wrecks, and walls to suit every taste and expertise level.

Zenobia Shipwreck

On the 4th of May 1980 the 10,000 ton Swedish roll-on roll-off ferry "Zenobia" slipped her mooring in Malmo Sweden, and sailed for Syria, her maiden voyage. The ship had 104 huge Lorries and trailers onboard full of cargo intended for Mediterranean and Middle East markets.

About mid-way between Crete and Athens, the Zenobia started to list to the port side. A check discovered that the pumps controlling the water ballast system had put too much water into the ballast tanks. After four days in Piraeus the water had been pumped out and it was thought the problem was solved...

Again she sailed on towards Syria, this time stopping at Cyprus, where the 3rd of June she anchored in Larnaca Bay. However, the problem with the water ballast was troubling the Zenobia. This time it was discovered that the computers controlling the water pumps were faulty. Worse news came to light - water was still being pumped into the side ballast tanks and it couldn't be turned off!

On the 4th of June the Zenobia, now with a serious side list was towed out of Larnaca harbour to caution against possible collisions inside the port. She was towed 2000 meters and left at anchor awaiting a possible solution. All the crew was taken off on the lifeboats.

At 2:30 am on Saturday the 7th of June 1980, more than two hundred million pounds worth of vehicles and cargo sank slowly to their final resting place. With no salvage work being allowed and over 100 heavy Lorries, industrial machinery, cars and extensive cargo, the Zenobia really is a diver's paradise.

Zenobia is officially classified as one of the best 10 diving destinations in the world and certainly the best in the Mediterranean. She is now a home to many species of marine life. Divers often encounter Amberjack, Grouper, Barracuda, Wrasse, Sea Hares, Tuna, ray and Scorpion Fish.

Diving on The Zenobia with Easy Divers

Trip begins around 8:00 am; we collect all divers from their hotels in Protaras and Ayia Napa. The trip takes 30 - 40 minuets to Larnaca Marina. Divers are return to their hotels around 3:00 pm.

We provide a fabulous Cypriot buffet/barbeque that won't disappoint, freshly prepared on board.
The Zenobia wreck offers extensive diving for all levels of scuba. Which can be enjoyed by relatively novice divers under the expert guidance of our experienced guides and instructors? Warm, clear waters of the Mediterranean and sea temperatures range from a comfortable 16c in the winter to 28c in the summer months. Visibility also ranges from 10 meters to an incredible 40 meters. There is very little underwater current too. The climate of Cyprus offers all year round diving.

PADI open water-qualified divers or equivalent with a reasonable number of logged dives or take a refresher dive before is advised. During the dive we can easily view the whole wreck at a depth of 16-22 meters due to the fantastic visibility in this area of the Mediterranean. The majority of the resident fish and other marine life can also be enjoyed at this depth. For the more experienced diver the wreck can be dived to a depth of up to 40 meters, although we recommend not exceeding a maximum depth of 35 meters. For those divers who wish to dive with Enriched Air NITROX, this can be arranged.

SY DIVERS CYPRUS

Safe Nitrox Diving is getting more and more popular among divers. For some the extended bottom times using Nitrox tables or Nitrox dive computers are an important factor, but most people get a Nitrox certification for the extra safety aspects of Nitrox scuba diving. If the safety issue is your main reason for diving with Nitrox, you don’t need a Nitrox dive computer, even the Nitrox dive tables are not necessary. Just dive Nitrox on air tables with the maximum depth that goes with your specific Nitrox mix.

Easy Divers is a PADI 5-Star Instructor Development Centre and a BSAC Training Centre. In 2006 we started to discuss diving policies. Our FREE NITROX we started the program in January 2007. It has already got some favorable comments on the safety for divers and an exceptional amount of votes for our FREE use of dive computers.
